ENTHUSIASM

WINS THE GOLD

RUSSIAN SPORT is to get a bigger slice of the budget. This means that the Soviet Union is still smarting from the recent beatings their sportsmen have been getting.

And so a bigger handful of roubles means that they are going to level things up again?

Now let's have a look at this cash and sport thing.

Some people think that if you have got money you become good at sport. Well, with cash in the bank you can have time off from work. You improve a great deal. Some go on to make the grade.

Then there is the sportsman who has to do a day's work before he can loosen up. He, too, improves. Some go on to make the grade.

Of the two types of sportsman, more come from the category who have to do a day's work before they get down to practise.

Now it was thought that the Russians had solved the problem of breeding sporting champions. They plucked the potential out of the masses and carefully groomed it to gold standard.

Plenty of time, practice and there was a champion. For years it has been records galore and gold galore. They got so good at sport that people began to think all Russians were nine-foot tall.

But wait a minute. The Russians have not been having it so good lately. Behind the Iron Curtain there has been an inquest. Now we hear that sportsmen will get more cash.

It seems as if they are speculating to accumulate-roubles for gold.

In this mad rush to win, there is one small thing that is glossed over with the speed of thought. You do your sport because you want to.

This want is enthusiasm. It's the fue! that drives a man to the top. Without it you might as well pack up and go home.

But with only a spark of enthusiasm you can fan it to a white hot flame

The rags-to-riches story is always a winner. It's so simple it seems made up. Training is crammed into all the odd moments that are usually wasted. Every bit of energy is used in every second's training.

Enthusiasm is pricelessnot even the Russians can buy it.
